Game Changers: Exploring Career and School Options  with Tom Bergeron

Tom Bergeron is the co-founder of InventiveLabs, a career and business incubator focused on college-aged adults with dyslexia, ADHD, and ASD. The Lab runs a hands-on program helping individuals find their path forward by exploring career and school options, or maybe even starting their own business. Tom experienced many challenges in school, but by charting his own path he found success in business. He is now committed to helping the next generation find their path forward and launch their careers. He believes it isn’t a race to the finish line, but a journey of learning and exploration to find a livelihood that offers fulfillment and success.

Discussion Overview:

InventiveLabs works with college-aged students that have struggled with the traditional path of getting good grades, going to college, and landing a dream job. Some of their students have struggled with school since first grade. Some have done well until the demands of high school or college overwhelmed them. Most struggle with anxiety and/or a learning difference. All are trying to find their path forward in a world that can seem unforgiving. Tom will start the discussion by sharing InventiveLabs’ process for helping identify career paths that may or may not include college, then building a roadmap to launch that career. He will also discuss their approach to building back confidence and helping individuals embrace their uniqueness.

Two Questions for discussion:

  • How do you instill confidence in a student that is struggling with their academics?
  • Students often “push back” on receiving an accommodation so they don’t feel different from their peers.  How do you provide accommodations so the student doesn’t feel “embarrassed” by the accommodation?
